HGTV crew discovers a 'new state bird'

KAPA'A — A slight mist halted production as crew members
scrambled for the shelter of a gazebo.
Taking advantage of the diffused light from the overcast skies, Renato Moore, director for the "Look
At What I Did!" series produced by Home and Garden Television Network (HGTV), worked the video camera
in tandem with technician Chris Wiecking.
"Rain is not good for the lenses," the crew members noted
while waiting for the mist to pass through at the home of
Daisy and Francesco Garripoli.
Andrew Mark was ready to pull out the reflectors, but the lighting did not require the special aids
on this outing.
Dettre Schmidt, the show's producer, said the crew members arrived here on Saturday, and will spend
the week targeting five Kaua'i homes before leaving for the Big Island on Friday.
On Monday, the crew that includes Bill Paris of O'ahu worked to get segments on some of the facets
of the Garripoli home that the couple built on the 6.25-acre parcel that Daisy Garripoli said "used
to be a cow pasture."
Tucked away in one corner of the property was an old school bus that Daisy Garripoli said they lived
in while construction was under way.
"Francesco even built screens for the windows to keep out the bugs and mosquitos," Daisy Garripoli said.
During the filming, the abundance of wild fowl was taken into consideration and worked into the filming
sequence, crew members halting their production to watch the flight of a rooster, noting that they
had never seen chickens fly.
However, when the tour helicopters, labeled "the new state bird" by members of the film crew, passed
overhead, filming halted due to the noise.
Noting that the "new state bird" come in flocks of more than one, Wiecking kept his eye on the audio
meter to see when filming could resume, as the caravan of three craft flew up the valley.
While on Kaua'i, the crews will be working at the homes of Christian and Nadine Riso in Lawa'i, Sally
and Dean French's home in Kalaheo, Tom Teige's residence in Hanapepe, and Bruna Stude and Carter Corey's
home in Kalaheo.
The crew returns to Los Angeles on March 26 after tours of the Big Island and O'ahu.
Once information is learned about when the Kaua'i show or shows will air, that information will be
presented to readers of The Garden Island.
The Home and Garden Television Network is on channel 59 of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable system on
Kaua'i.
